★ Five rules that pay for themselves

  1. Sort before you weigh. Mixed loads pay the lowest rate in the pile. 5 minutes of sorting = 20% more.
  2. Strip insulated wire when you can. Bare bright pays 2–3× insulated. Worth the time on copper.
  3. Magnet test everything. Sticks = ferrous (low). Doesn't = non-ferrous (high). A pocket magnet is your friend.
  4. Call ahead for the day's rate. Prices change daily. A yard 5 miles farther can pay 15% more.
  5. Get the ticket, keep the ticket. Yards make mistakes. Reconcile weights against the quoted rates.
